Not that I really wanted to ask this, but… Do you hear me? Do you see my screen share? Can you please turn on your camera so that I can get assured I’m talking to an actual person?

I wonder how much our business etiquette has changed during the last year. “Do you hear me?” is right there somewhere in between hello and a handshake. Sort of virtual handshake to assure both parties have a functional communication line.

“Do you hear me?” is not a big problem in virtual business setting. Annoyance at most. Though it causes an absolutely ridiculous sense of helplessness if you are a teacher who is trying to engage kids online. And for speakers at virtual events it brings the feeling of discomfort that is only comparable to that moment when you realize you are sort of talking to yourself and nobody is really paying attention.

We have touched on this topic before, broadly addressing issues with the lack of feedback in virtual event setting. But by now pretty much everyone should have asked or heard the sentence “Do you hear me?” at least once or twice.

And while I’d be looking forward for innovations in this space, I am not sure if those can come at a reasonable cost for privacy. There is enough surveillance tech out there already, and none of that makes me feel excited. But neither does asking “Do you hear me?”

So, while I am excited to see how tech will be addressing this issue, I can honestly tell that I am even more excited to go back to physical in-person events. As soon as we can, of course. In the mean time, if you are event organizer — please be mindful of this issue and help your speakers to feel heard.
