This week a special shoutout goes to Saturday Night Takeaway and their virtual audience wall that is making rounds in British news.

For once, I am bit surprised that existence of virtual audience on a TV show is newsworthy. After all, it is not a particularly new phenomenon. I can recall certain TV news emissions from spring 2020 that had politicians talking while surrounded with faces on the screens all around them. Future was there and then. So, what’s new?

New seems to be technology behind the virtual audience. Attendees themselves explained to media and showed on TikTok how different it feels being in a TV show that way. It is not “just another Zoom call”. They told that it is more like watching TV, just that the TV is talking back to you and telling what to do. Clap, speak, prepare props, now you are on the main screen.

And you know what? This sounds super exciting! This is an experience. It is an active participation in co-creation of event as an attendee. And, of course, and interactive element for the show organizers.

One common complaint from virtual event organizers and speakers themselves is that currently there are very limited ways to feel the audience. There is barely any feedback from the listeners, and each question submitted through the chat is priceless.

However, now the virtual audience tech is starting to go mainstream, and I am excited for the opportunities it offers. Audience management as one of the processes for virtual events. Audience as a Service. Bring it on!
