My friend held an online presentation to a virtual audience. Not for the first time, mind you. And not for the first time we talked about lack of interaction and feedback from the audience. How awkward it is to talk to a screen and not know if anyone is really paying attention. How you do not know if you are making any difference or people simply sit through the presentation because they have to. How this presentation could have been simply recorded instead of held live and no value would have been lost.

Just this time I asked a weird question: What’s the actual difference, in terms of impact, between virtual presentation and in-person one?

“Good question,” he said after thinking for a while. “Probably there is not much difference. But the waste is more obvious in a virtual setting.”

Now this answer made me sit down and think. We did not mind wasting our time and resources to hold presentations for a live audience. Taking payment out of equation, it always felt like being somewhere in-person had a value. But did it, really?

I am strong believer in return of ‘normal’ events. Yes, #wewillhugagain. But in the mean time we get a chance to rethink how we create value or are we all just wasting most of our time.
