Since EU is pushing deeptech to the top of their policy and funding priority list, I have been listening to more and more chatters in this area. Deeptech is quite foggy and not-well-defined area where events tend to be smaller — not comparable with general startup conferences and consumer-first approaches.

Not surprisingly, the key question deeptech ecosystem currently tackling is how to get scientists to do business. There is wealth of discoveries, technologies and patents catching dust in various drawers around labs that could have a huge potential to impact future society yet so few of them get to see the light. As one speaker kindly put it, scientists are interested in knowledge while businessmen are seeking answers.

Of course, spark can cross over these two approaches, and then a deeptech startups is born. It is just very difficult to make these sparks fly, not least because it is really complicated to access knowledge for anyone outside of labs.

Jes Broeng described this process as “contact sport”. It is incredibly beautiful metaphor to tell that entrepreneur (or investor!) needs to be continuously in touch with research community to be able to commercialise scientific discoveries.

But it is well worth it be in “contact”. Sparks will fly.
