7 Unofficial Bi Anthems

It feels like ‘bi’ is the word on everyone’s lips right now, with so many bi characters, songs, and lighting being splashed across our screens and into our headphones. To celebrate, Lois Shearing looks into 7 more songs that could be unofficial bi anthems.

First, queer icon and all around Goddess, Janelle Monáe bowled us over with the incredible “Make Me Feel”, a song celebrating all ‘sexual-benders’, with a video drenched in bisexual imagery and lighting. Then the beautiful Harry Styles put the final nail in biphobia’s coffin with his hit, “Medicine”. Then Rita Ora and her crew gave us the summer banger, “Girls”. And that was that. Bisexuality was accepted & celebrated globally.

Just kidding, but these absolute hits have helped the bi community celebrate our beauty.

Here a few songs which I think do the same, if you just listen hard enough:

1. All I Want — Walk the Moon

Walk the Moon’s pastel vibe is bi as hell. There’s no denying that several of their videos feature bi lighting & colour schemes. But ‘All I Want’ goes a step further with the lyrics “Maybe if I were straight” and “I am my own sexuality”.

2. Butch — Saint Motel

Contains the lyrics “I’m into you, but what am I into? A girl or are you a guy?” Being into someone even if you aren’t sure of their gender is possibly the most relatable bi feel.

3. So Emotional — Whitney Houston

Whitney Houston was allegedly a bi woman and this song is about being attracted to someone you feel like you can’t have, but want so much anyway. It might not get much more bi than that.

4. Girls/Girls/Boys — Panic! At the Disco

Okay, this is maybe cheating because the entire song is about bisexuality but it’s a fantastic celebration of girls who love girls and boys (love in not a choice).

5. Panic at the Disco’s entire discography

Starting out emo, going a bit hippy, and then flourishing into an upbeat, pastel goth. Bi culture and P!ATD’s evolution have run side-by-side. They can’t be separated.

6. Undercover — Kehlani

Another absolute banger by a queer woman singing about someone she’s dating, who other people don’t want to see her with. The subtext is pretty obvious to anyone with the right bi credentials.

7. Somebody Told Me — The Killers

The Boyfriend, who looked like a girlfriend that Brandon Flowers had in the February of last year? The same bi, genderfluid person who dated them both.
