Refine Music wants to refine electronic music fans experiences.

While the streaming music industry is undoubtedly thriving, it does not necessarily mean all of its areas are growing at the same pace. Refine Music is focusing on bridging the gap between agencies, labels, promoters and fans, to help them cut through the noise, which, in turn, would increase sales and engage music enthusiasts more.

The industry is growing, as well as maturing, bringing along a number of artists and labels to the top. But what about the smaller and local players? It will eventually be impossible for them to be heard.

Refine, a music intelligence platform, tries to keep an objective eye on the fast moving trends in electronic music. “By Gathering statistics on releases, what DJ are playing, what fans are discussing and sharing, we can get an accurate pulse on what’s actually going on” — says Johan Mickelin, founder of Refine.

Refine is aiming to use the gathered data to create tools for discovery, as well as helping festival and event promoters get accurate and helpful information about demand in order to deliver to fans better, help them discover more and therefore drive sales.

What sets Refine apart?

“We think what differentiates us from other services in the music industry is our focus on the electronic scene. Our overall goal is to use the available data to tie together events, music creators, distributors and fans, this puts us in a fairly unique position”, Johan says.

And there is more coming up! A new product will be launched this summer at IMS — Refine Business. The main engine of the platform is the combination of data gathering and music professionals using that data to create events and promote music. Promoters and festival organizers will save time on repetitive tasks, such as creating event and festival sites or artist bios based on digging info. Using Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Refine business costumises line-up info, playlist generation and artist information widgets for each unique event event. All embedded in customer websites.

Refine music also provides a unique opportunity for artists and promoters to control what is written and how they are promoted before the events. By giving access to uploading press kits to the platform, all event organizers (with confirmed bookings) will get the most accurate artist information. Booking agencies will gain more control over how their artists are presented.

“We combine the information of press kits with activity data to customize websites for festivals and events, liberating the industry from a series of intermediaries on the way.

By knowing the electronic music scene, based on reliable data, we can help fans discover events and artists.

We learned a lot from our first product which was a music discovery app we launched last year. We found that fans use our app to learn about artists and listen to their music before they go to events. We are hoping to take this knowledge and give it back to the industry.”
