The Joy of Missing Out (JOMO)

I wrote on FOMO or the fear of missing out in one of my earlier posts. Recently, while reading about Google I/O 2018, I came across its counterpart — a new acronym — JOMO, or the joy of missing out.

In his keynote address, Sundar Pichai said Google wants people to go from FOMO to JOMO and that they are committed to introducing new features to achieve this.

If you aren’t familiar with FOMO (fear of missing out) yet, it is basically, a form of anxiety that we are missing out on something or that people are having more fun than us.

And what really is JOMO or the joy of missing out?

In the technological context, it simply means that you switch off and disconnect from all technology and find a balance with the real world. Google has announced the launch of a new feature called Android Dashboard which will display your screen time and suggest if you are over-indulging in your phone. A pretty good move for our digital well-being.

Outside the technological context, the joy of missing out is not caring about being missed out, or about being present everywhere or doing everything. You are at peace with the moments you have chosen for yourself. It is a conscious choice to miss out on things that may not be the best fit for your own happiness.

In stark contrast to FOMO, the joy of missing out encourages us to embrace the pleasure of choosing what we want to do. It is about saying ‘no’ to all the urges and impulses that stem from the fear of missing out. It’s not about sitting idle and letting life pass by, but it is about doing things that truly bring you joy.

Because the things we regret most at the end of our lives aren’t the missed parties and events or boring weekends. We regret the deeper stuff — not having lived as per our own will, being dictated by societal norms and not being honest about who we really are.

Its time we choose joy over fear. Empowerment over anxiety. JOMO over FOMO.
