Make Memories

Your Child’s Hand Print

You Can Create One!

Long ago, in the 1950s when I was in elementary school, we donned our aprons and began.

We were going to create salt dough hand prints that our parents could hang on a wall in the home.

Fast forward to when I had children.

I found a recipe for making hand prints that was more a recipe than a craft project.
So, whether you have small children or grandchildren, try this:

SALT DOUGH HAND PRINT RECIPE

  1. 4 cups all purpose flour 1 cup salt 1/2 cup water
  2. Combine and mix all ingredients in a large bowl.
  3. Knead dough on a flat surface for 10 minutes.
  4. At this point, add a few drops of food coloring to the dough.
  5. Roll the dough to about 1/2 inch thick.
  6. Use the child’s hand to make an imprint.
  7. Use a circle shaped bowl to trace around the outside of the handprint, centering the handprint.
  8. Make a hole in the top of the artwork with a straw to hang it.
  9. Harden the handprint by doing the following:
Bake at 250 degrees F for about 2 hours. It will harden more when out of the oven.
OR Use Microwave — time will vary depending on microwave and thickness of the dough.
    OR Air dry 24–48 hours
  10. Use acrylic paint to add color where you want.
  11. Hang on the wall and enjoy!

Don’t stop there — Christmas ornaments and other decorations can be created.

Feel like a kid again!
