SLEEPING WALLS
For many years my walls were somewhat quiet.
Living in a house can be that way.
Only my family’s voices, kitchen noises, laundry noises and music lived there.
Then it was time to move.
Apartment walls have their own sounds:
Pizza delivery down the hall,
A man’s raised voice at a child or wife.
A dog shaking his kennel while his master was gone,
Ambulance sirens and the fire rescue department arriving,
Children’s laughter while running down the hallways,
Dogs, large and small, barking non-stop,
Moving day sounds, up and down stairs, bumping, knocking, loud footsteps.
Cars with broken mufflers warming up in the parking lot.
Then it was time for ME to move once again — to a senior citizen complex.
Now all was quiet.
Wait — what is that rhythmic sound?
It’s snoring!
During the day it is the 80 year old professional hockey player who has fallen asleep and is snoring in his favorite chair.
On the other side of me, a round grandma is sleeping, gently snoring her night away.
My wall are sleeping and I’m content with that!
Then why am I awake, writing this?
Is it too quiet? NEVER!
