For the past two years, my son and I have journeyed to a rural area south of where I live. It’s not far, but far enough to enter into the magical Sunflower Fields.

To our delight, we discovered this 300 acre Sunflower farm and were amazed that we could DRIVE through it, twisting and turning on a pleasantly bumpy dirt road.

In my area, it is common to have walking paths through Sunflowers but this is the DRIVE through a Sunflower field that can be enjoyed!

For as far as the eye could see, there were Sunflowers!

How did this magical place come to be?

The story, as told by her grandson to us, is that Grandma longed to walk among some Sunflowers on the family farm. Being unable to walk that far, her son took her out to the farm field and they decided that they would plant the entire acreage in Sunflowers. Then they would open their farm to the public to enjoy.

Last year, their first year, saw an amazing crop of giant flowers towering over the cars which slowly snaked their way through them.

We drove through TWICE with our mouths hanging open. We were in awe!

This year, in early summer, we drove to the area to see how the Sunflowers were doing.

There were NONE.

We mourned the loss of a new yearly tradition of enjoying it all.

When we returned mid-August, the dusty, winding road beckoned us to come enjoy!

SUNFLOWERS galore greeted us!

How could that be? They’d only been planted a month earlier and yet there they were! Please come along and see….

Yes, the sandy road is bumpy, twisting and turning through the beauty.

It’s fun to see some of the ‘characters’ that stand out from the crowd.

There’s always one!

Even the backs of Sunflowers have intricate patterns of beauty!

Eventually, the petals begin to wilt.

Yet their lifespan is not complete. Let’s look at the ‘face’ again — the place where seeds are formed. God’s intricate designs can be seen!

When harvested in November, the Sunflower seeds will be sent to a nearby Amish general store to be sold as birdseed.

Goodbye until next year….
