THE TRAGIC HARVEST

It began when the snow was still on the ground.

Baggy Carrot and ScareLady sat hunched over Baggy’s old kitchen table making garden plans.

After much deliberation, their order was placed from the well worn seed catalog.

Snow melted, the ground began to thaw — the two of them were so impatient for SPRING to arrive.

It seemed forever that they awaited the arrival of the seeds.

It was time — for Baggy to use his trusty spade to turn over the earth.

His wheebarrow was always nearby

Scare raked it smooth, placed some stakes with string stretched between them to guide where they wanted the rows, straight and orderly.

On just the right day when the soil was warm and the moon just right, it was Planting Day!

Scare dropped those precious little seeds into neat rows marching along.

Now to patiently watch- with a little sunshine and rain — up popped new life!

Peas, radishes, onions, lettuce, beans, squash, watermelon, pumpkins…EVERYTHING!

Time passed from Spring to Summer to Harvest Time

Baggy could hear Scare sobbing as she walked down the hallway to the kitchen.

I CAN’T DO IT, I CAN’T, I JUST CAN’T!!!

“All those cute little plump tomatos, lovely beans, colorful squash.”
“I just CANNOT pick them. Baggy, you will have to do it….”

Thus begn the harvest — Baggy in the garden, pulling and cutting as Scare was in the house crying.

Gardening Season was over.
The Beginning was so full of promise.
The Ending seemed so tragic…

Until the first delicious meal was served.
