About.me?

Compliment me, my ego loves it!

After featuring in the top 5 most popular and as a staff pick on About.me this weekend, I was rather surprised and flattered.

I have to admit: although I was an early adopter of About.me, after setting it up I left it to its own devices and thought nothing further of it. I wrote a short bio, set it up with all the right links, then added the link to my email signature and Twitter, website and LinkedIn profiles.

Then nothing happened.

For months I thought nothing of the odd email that got sent to my inbox with a compliment from other About.me users.

Until last Friday.

In one of those rather precious moments when you have cleared your Twitter and email inboxes, and responded to all comments on other social media outlays — I ventured into my About.me page to see if anything was new, or if I needed to address anything, change settings, etc.

… and as I browsed through a few profiles it just hit me: My target client audience was right there in front of my eyes! I could even read their personal bio and compliment them — everyone loves getting compliments (I sure do!).

Even better, I could link up to these clients on the social media outlet that I knew would be their go-to for business (LinkedIn for CEO’s, Instagram for Art Directors, Twitter for Trend Setters and Musicians, etc.). It was great, and being stuck on a two hour train journey meant that I could dedicate this chunk of time to being compliment-happy.

So how is it I managed to end up on the featured list?

I suspect that my name — Anna Gunn — was the biggest thing that drew one of the founders, Ryan Freitas (@ryanchris)’s attention to to me initially — after all my twitter feed often gets attention from ‘Breaking Bad’ fans and I occasionally let slip fake spoilers to brighten my day! ;) Sorry! :D

Now here’s an interesting fact: as you look through those at the top of the popular / featured lists there is a remarkable trend — pretty much all of them have great, grabbing profile images.

Not many of them have been taken with a camera phone, on holidays, at a party, or as a “oh crap, I need a profile pic” second thought.

They all also have heartfelt bios — some are better written than others, but all have an interesting story to tell.

What I find amazing about this platform is that those people who are normally inaccessible tell you something about themselves that is personal, and give you a way to be able to connect to them — and then send them a compliment!
