Election Motivates Sanctification
Paul, like Peter, sees election as a motivation for sanctification. How does election bear such fruit? What is the gospel’s logic here?
It is a first principle of the gospel that unless God had set his love upon us long before we turned to him we would never have come to Christ.
His choice of us preceded our choice of him. He loved us before we loved him. He had compassion on us before we showed any interest in trusting him. He had been kind to us. He has been gentle with us. He has shown divine meekness in Christ. He has been patient with us. No wonder then that God’s chosen people should react to others in exactly the same way. No wonder we should want to dress, spiritually, like him and grow in godliness, reflecting his moral beauty.
