From the beginning the people who changed the web were youngsters working in a garage that no one heard of but had an idea to change the world and the way people connect.

All the top apps on the Appstore are acquired, cloned or owned by Facebook. Gearóid O'Rourke

Google, Facebook, Apple all came from places with humble origins. And they had an idea and saw the future in a way no one else failed to see. Today they are called the top five together with Amazon and Microsoft.

If you look at the top six apps today on App Store you will notice that they are either made by Facebook, owned by Facebook or cloned by Facebook.

There were times in history where monopolies were formed and times where it felt as if these monopolies were here to stay. AOL, Microsoft, Yahoo all once seemed threatening and seems like an ultimate monopoly but fast forward two decades teens won’t even know what’s AOL stands for.

But for small startups today the future appears bleak because every day it seems as the future belongs to Facebook and Google and no one seems knows hot to break that monopoly.

If you look at the top six apps today on App Store you will notice that they are either made by Facebook, owned by Facebook or cloned by Facebook. The only apps that refused to be acquired by Facebook ‘Snapchat’ was cloned by Instagram that is owned by Facebook and ‘Snapchat’ is struggling to find ways to grow and attract new users.

Last week Facebook just acquired tbh a nine week old startup that went viral last month for an undisclosed amount when they jumped to the 6th place in appstore.

So what does this mean to you? Either you have to sell your company to Facebook or Google or face the threat of being cloned.

Not only that the industries that people think which is going to be huge in future are all made for big players like Facebook and Google. For example, artificial intelligence is tailor-made for Google and Facebook as they have large amounts of data that no one else seems to possess.

VR/AR is also dominated by big players like Facebook, Google, and Apple as they control the platforms and tools that people will interact with VR/AR.

So even if there are youngsters out there that are having the next big idea these players have become the gatekeepers and no one is going to go pass without their permissions and face the threat of being acquired or cloned.

The future belongs to Google and Facebook and there is nothing we can do about it.

What is your idea about these big players being the gatekeepers? do you agree with them or do you think differently? Leave a reply and let me know what you think.
