Can you share with us your journey from being an intern to becoming a product designer at Refresh? What were the key milestones or experiences that led to your growth in the company?

After I obtained my BA Degree in Digital Design with a specialization in interaction design, my goal was to find a summer internship prior to resuming my studies. I was presented with an opportunity at Refresh Studio to work as an intern on a part-time basis. This arrangement allowed me to pursue my studies while simultaneously gaining valuable experience in the field.

During my internship I was exposed to a variety of real-world projects, some included projects for leading companies across South Africa. This exposure has improved my skills profoundly. My skills have also increased in number as I have been able to learn from some of the best in the industry. I have learnt the methods they use and industry secrets to create award winning products and services.

Lastly, while engaging in various projects, I was granted the freedom to explore creative concepts and even make mistakes. This approach has significantly enriched my learning experience by providing me with the chance to develop a deeper understanding of the creative process, refine my problem-solving skills, and ultimately cultivate a sense of innovation that I believe will greatly benefit my future in the field.

What inspired you to pursue a career in design? Were there any specific experiences or influences that guided you towards this field?

After finishing high school, I took a gap year to explore potential career avenues. Initially, I considered a path in the health and fitness field and enrolled in a personal training course. However, upon completing the course, I came to the realization that this wasn’t the direction I wanted to pursue.

Given my fascination with gaming, the idea of a career in game design began to take shape. While researching degree programs that aligned with this interest, I stumbled upon the Multimedia Degree at the University of Johannesburg. This program presented a unique opportunity for me to delve into various digital mediums and explore a wide array of potential career paths.

During my academic journey, an unexpected yet intriguing shift occurred. The degree not only introduced me to coding but also immersed me in the intricate realm of Interaction Design. The fusion of creativity and technology to shape user experiences immediately captured my attention.

Even though my journey wasn’t linear, diving into these academic adventures sparked a strong passion for the user experience. I can’t really imagine putting the same energy into anything else. Even though my path wasn’t clearly defined, I’ve realized that sometimes the twists and turns lead you to that awesome feeling of doing what you’re truly passionate about.

Design is a dynamic and rapidly evolving field. How do you stay up-to-date with the latest design trends and technologies to ensure your work remains innovative and relevant?

To stay up-to-date with the ever-changing landscape of Product Design, I make use of a range of methods. A primary method involves the use of the social media platform X, previously known as Twitter. Within this space, I actively follow prominent figures within the Product Design domain, who consistently provide insights into advancements not only in Product Design itself but also in interconnected fields like AI and graphic design.

Furthermore, leveraging the capabilities of X, I’m able to engage with specific subjects of interest. This tailored approach ensures that my feed is consistently filled with relevant content directly related to Product Design and related domains. In addition, I have found that LinkedIn occasionally provides valuable insights too.

In addition, notable websites I use to specifically stay up-to-date on user interface trends are Awwwards and Webflow. I frequent the platform UX Magazine to catch up on news and relevant articles.

Can you highlight a project that was particularly impactful in your journey at Refresh? How did you approach the design process, and what were the outcomes?

During my time at Refresh, there’s one project that’s really stood out — the one I did for a company called Talada. They wanted a new website, and I was given complete freedom to make it happen. It wasn’t an easy task. I tinkered with many different designs — hardly getting any shut eye in the process. The stress was real, especially with tight deadlines. no doubt about it. But it was worth it in the end. I’m so proud of what we achieved.

Finishing that project taught me so much. I figured out ways to streamline my work process, and I’ve carried those lessons into all the projects I’ve tackled since then. It was like a crash course in improving how I get things done, and I’m grateful for the experience.

What challenges did you face during your transition from an intern to a product designer? How did you overcome these challenges, and what advice would you offer to others in a similar situation?

The most significant challenge I encountered was crafting innovative user interface designs. My academic studies heavily emphasized theoretical concepts and ideologies, which meant I had limited practical experience with actual UI projects. Overcoming this hurdle required a concerted effort, and I was fortunate that my involvement in diverse projects enabled me to rapidly cultivate these skills. Consequently, this journey not only honed my abilities but also elevated me as a more proficient designer.
