The Sky That Falls Each Night
Miracles are all around us
When I was young, I believed my backyard was heaven. The strawberry bushes on the side of our house were my second favorite thing in the world.
Although I liked being outdoors, I never enjoyed being out in the dark. I could not see that well and always tripped over both feet.
Getting comfortable enough to go outside at night took me a long time. In fact, I was in my twenties before I found God in the air of the night.
In graduate school, I had a friend who was a choreographer. One night, I told her for no reason that I wanted to pray on the roof of one of the dorms. She was an undergraduate student.
We climbed onto the roof, positioned ourselves like statues, and intoned short prayers. We held these forms for only a few minutes, but the effects were transformative.
I felt alive and happy. Most of all, I felt this ineffable, unexplainable coolness in my heart. Was it in the left atria, the right ventricle, or all over?
Who knows?
I think God speaks to us first as energy and electricity, but science would have none of this!
