Mom, I want to send you some REGEN tokens.

It’s not your grandma’s cryptocurrency. This is REGEN: A Platform for a Thriving Planet.

As of today, REGEN tokens are now transferable. That functionality has all sorts of implications for Regen Ledger and the Regen Network community, but it also means that we can now transfer tokens between wallets. There are a number of people that I have been telling about Regen Network for years and have even promised that I would give them some tokens when it was finally possible. That time has come, and the first person I would like to send tokens to is my mom!

And, I figured, what better way to give the community a very clear explanation of how to set up a wallet, receive and manage tokens than the way I would do it for my mom!

Hey Mom, I want to send you some REGEN tokens!

There are a few things that you need to do to make this possible. My hope is that this will be really easy.

First of all, for me to send you REGEN tokens, you need to have a wallet that can hold REGEN tokens. I know you already have a Coinbase account, but Coinbase is not yet listing REGEN (not yet), so we’ll have to use a different solution. The best way right now is to set up a KEPLR wallet on your computer.

If you would like a bit more in-depth and technical information about all the ways you could set up a wallet and keep it safe, I suggest Dan Pittman’s blog post, Setting up Keplr Wallet and Best Practices for keeping your crypto safe! But here’s the simple version.

Setting up your Keplr Wallet

Much of the information contained in this section was taken directly from the Keplr FAQ and wallet setup guide, in addition to Dan’s blog post mentioned above.

Regen Network is working with the Keplr wallet, which is our preferred interface and software wallet extension. I hope that this section gets you set up using Keplr with ease.

So, here’s what you need to do:

You need to be using your Chrome Browser (not Safari, Firefox, Netscape, or America Online, though you can use Brave).

Download the Chrome Extension and click the [Add] button

[Add “Keplr”] window will show up. Here you have to choose [Add Extension]

You may be asked if you want to sync this extension across all your devices. That’s up to you. From my perspective, it’s probably fine just to have it on this one device.

At the end of the download, you can start to interact with your browser extension. The way you do that is by finding the little ‘Puzzle Piece icon’ in the top right corner of your browser window. If you find the URL bar, (where it currently says: https://chrome.google.com/webstore), keep going to the right and look for the little puzzle piece. Click on that, and then click on the purple ‘K” Icon, the KEPLR wallet extension.

IMPORTANT: DON’T SIGN IN WITH GOOGLE

Next, you will see a screen that looks like this:

With many applications, it’s very convenient to sign in with Google. I suggest that with any cryptocurrency wallet it’s important to do it another way. When you are managing cryptocurrencies, it’s important that you have control of your own “private keys.” So, instead, we are going to click on ‘Create new account’.

This next step is really important! You will see a list of 12 words. This is your private mnemonic. If you ever lose your computer or want to import your wallet to another device, these words will be what you need. And also, if anyone else got your 12 words, they would have access to your tokens, so keep them very safe!

Make sure to store these words in a safe place and never share them with anyone. If you are only keeping small amounts of cryptocurrency, then storing them in a password-protected file or password manager is probably fine. If you plan to have large amounts then we should discuss in more depth, but I’m not going to do that here.

Be sure to write them down and then store them in a safe place.

Create an account name: Mom’s REGEN Wallet, or something like that. This is just for your own organization. It’s not public.

Create a password that you will use to get into the KEPLR wallet. Again, if you only have small amounts it’s probably fine to use a password that you use often, but if you have larger amounts you will want a significantly more unique and complex password. Be sure to store it in your password manager.
And click next.

Now KEPLR is going to make sure that you have stored your 12 words correctly. So click on them in the right order and click done.

At this point, you have successfully set up your KEPLR wallet and the screen will close. To view your wallet, click on the puzzle piece in the top right of the browser and then click on the KEPLR extension.

One thing to note here is that you haven’t just set up a REGEN wallet, you have also set up a Cosmos ATOM wallet, a Kava wallet, an AKASH wallet, etc. They are all members of the Cosmos community. So at first, when you open your KEPLR wallet you are looking at the Cosmos wallet.
To switch to REGEN, please click at the top of your wallet where it says ‘Cosmos”, and scroll down to Regen.

You should now see the word Regen at the top of your wallet and under that is the name of your wallet and a string of characters that looks like this:

regen1fl9n8dt….es9jg2

That’s your personal Regen wallet address. If you click on it you can copy it to your clipboard and then paste it into an e-mail to me, and once I have it I can send you some REGEN tokens! If the address starts with cosmos1… then that’s your cosmos address. REGEN addresses always start with the word regen…

This string of characters is called your public key. It is totally safe to share it. You can send it to people, print it on a t-shirt or put it on a billboard and suggest people send you REGEN tokens. It only allows people to send to you and to see your history of transactions, but it doesn’t allow anyone to take tokens from you.

Yay! You have a wallet. Please do send me your wallet address and I’ll send you some tokens!

Test Transactions

Most likely when you send it to me, I’ll send you a test transaction of something like 0.1 REGEN, just to see if it actually goes through. This is always a good idea, just in case the setup process didn’t go right or the cut and paste didn’t work right, etc. Once the test goes through I’ll send you the rest.

As they say, you can never repay the debt owed to a mother, but a handful of REGEN tokens is pretty cool!

What to do with your tokens after you get them?

So, as you know, we have big plans with Regen Network. Eventually, you will be able to purchase your personal carbon offsets with REGEN tokens, you will be able to make investments into Regenerative Agriculture with REGEN tokens, donate REGEN tokens to indigenous communities and conservation projects, and you may even be able to invest in a diversified portfolio of regenerative projects. We’re working on it!

For now, I suggest you stake your regen tokens and start earning block rewards. To learn more about that we can chat, or you can check out this article from Dan Pittman: Staking with Keplr.

If you are my mom, please just give me a call if anything above doesn’t work for you. Otherwise, it works really well to join the Regen Network Discord Group and go to the #wallet_support channel with your questions.

Love you,

Christian

Oh, by the way, Marissa and I are pregnant.
