Moon Hooch, an explosive horn and percussion band that champions the environment and organizes fan-led sustainability action event, partnered with 30 fans at Sow Harmony in Louisa County, Virginia to implement a reforestation project to sequester carbon and improve habitat for wildlife on a tract of native woodland which was deforested in 2019.

This tree planting partnership aims to kick-start the forest succession sequence by replanting hardwoods to accelerate the regrowth of the native deciduous forest. The planting site was once a mixed hardwood forest dominated by oaks, maples, and beeches. However, after the land was clear-cut, the tree seed bank has not recovered well due to severe loss of topsoil and the uncovering of a hard acidic shale strata underneath. Only native oak saplings are naturally recovering near the stream. Virginia Pine monoculture was thickly replanted after the site was clear-cut and is growing nicely. However, many areas of the site remain barren of trees

“I feel like we’re putting the intention of positive change constantly into our music. While we’re playing, I often see the future emerging: skyscrapers getting covered in plants, frowns turning into smiles, fistfights into hugs. I can see the energy of love and collaboration and trust replace the energy of fear, hatred, and violence.”

— Moon Hooch

Regen Network is partnered with Moon Hooch to calculate the carbon sequestration of this tree planting over its lifetime and issue carbon credits to the fan volunteers who participated in the restoration planting event. Regen Network is also distributing REGEN tokens to these participants, Regen Network’s utility token powering its global climate finance-focused blockchain.

The on-site Sow Harmony native plant nursery is supplying the trees and grows local and wild-type natives that were found regionally. The 300 native trees that were planted by volunteers to restore the landscape are 90% White Oak, Red Oak, Eastern Red Cedar, and Red Maple, and 10% American Holly, Black Cherry, Black Walnut, Black Willow, Eastern Redbud, and Flowering Dogwood, and are on average 12–24” tall and less than 1” in girth at the time of planting.

“Moon Hooch and their community are pioneering the fusion of music, community and ecological regeneration. Regen Network exists to unlock the potential of regeneration and Moon Hooch is leading the way by reconnecting meaning and purpose, with art and beauty.”
