5 top tips for a productive flight

Flying on business can be stressful, airports always seem to be crowded, airport Wi-Fi is not always available or consistent, and most of all, it can be very time consuming. Every minute you spend queueing for airport security, waiting for your gate to show up, and settling into the journey is valuable time taken out of your day. While we all have good intentions at heart, being productive while flying is not always easy. So, here are some our top tips to help save on stress, and maximize on productivity.

Pack efficiently

Make sure you pack for productivity. For brief business trips, take a small wheeled carry-on bag, and inside it pack a smaller bag with all the essentials that you will need throughout your journey. In this bag, you can pack your laptop, tablet, a notepad and pen, a pouch with your ID and other important documents, some noise cancelling headphones and a bottle of water (purchased at the duty-free, of course).

This trick saves you from digging in your bag while other annoyed passengers are trying to get through, and it also makes debarking the plane a whole lot easier.

Arrive at the airport with all your electronic devices fully charged, as you will be less likely to be productive if you’re left with a drained battery at the beginning of your flight, but also because of the new rules requiring a passenger to demonstrate that their device is charged. Make sure to have chargers to hand in case you run out of battery. You can also invest in a portable battery charger which can charge your devices on-the-go, and which saves you searching aimlessly for a power outlet.

Make use of airport lounges

If you have an early check-in, a lengthy layover, or your flight has been cancelled, it might be worth booking into an airport lounge. In most airport lounges, you can enjoy some peace and quiet, away from all the airport commotion, free refreshments, and most of all an opportunity to be productive. Lounges are ideal places to catch up on some work before you board your flight. Do some research, and find out what services your airport lounges have to offer.

Preparation is key

Make a list of tasks to complete by the end of the journey. Traveling is time consuming, so you might as well make the most of that time. Be realistic, because a 4-hour plane journey does not necessarily mean 4 hours of consistent productivity from takeoff to landing. Also don’t set yourself a vague set of outlines; be specific and set concrete tasks.

Check if your airline offers Wi-Fi, and if it’s free. If not, consider buying Wi-Fi access while still on the ground, which will be cheaper and easier, and will waste less time. Be prepared to work offline as well, in case something goes wrong.

Print out documents that you need to read — call us old-fashioned, but we still find it easier to read from physical paper than staring at a screen for several hours at a time. This also saves on battery power, when you could be doing more important things on your electronic device.

Network

Make small talk with other fliers, particularly if you’re in business class. This is a great opportunity to network, and perhaps learn something new. It is also a potential opportunity to expand your client base, or your professional network. The worst that could happen if your neighbor is not very talkative, is that the conversation ends at hello.

Sleep

This one is especially valuable on long flights. Avoid jet lag, and sleep through the stress of crossing time zones, to make sure you are refreshed when you arrive at your destination.

Pack a neck pillow and prepare for a difficult sleeping position — this will help you avoid dozing off on your neighbor’s shoulder, and waking up to an awkward remainder of the journey. For frequent fliers, we would recommend packing a sleeping mask and earplugs, or a pair of noise cancelling headphones.
