Neurodivergent black children and children from disadvantaged homes are disproportionately excluded from schools, as a strategy.

I get a variety of reactions when I tell people that I was a school refuser who was excluded at age 15. One that I hear a lot is, “but you’re not typical.” I realise it’s meant as a back-handed compliment related to another that goes, “but you don’t sound/look autistic.
