Desert Rain House, the world’s first Living Building Challenge residence.

The following is an overview of the podcast episode with Al Tozer of Tozer Designs on The Regenerative Real Estate Podcast.

Al Tozer is the founding principal of Tozer Design out of Bend, Oregon

Al grew up on the central California coast and grew an interest in biology and ecology by through raising animals. As a high school teacher of Global Ecology, Al first was exposed to green architecture when he decided to design his own house.

From early on Al carved out a niche in the built environment by blending ecology with architecture so that the environment could support all living things and connecting people to place.

His practice is famously known for designing the world’s first Living Building Challenge certified residence called Desert Rain. They are now working on another Living Building Challenge in Bend, Oregon, called River Sol with the goal of building a market-rate custom residence. They are able to do this because of the growth of the field and their previous experience and knowledge with Living Buildings.

In this podcast interview, Neal Collins of Latitude interviews Al about the experience of designing Living Buildings and working with the systems that underpin and support them. His insights into how to approach an ambitious project like a Living Building Challenge are crucial for those out there that are interested in doing similar sustainable and regenerative real estate projects.
