Moving good, doing good

“Motion is Lotion”, “Squat to Move” and “We fight Inactivity”. We originally came up with these slogans based on the lack of remote exercising for the physical therapy patients. We’ve come a long way to fix a simple problem of physical inactivity, because people move too little.

How to measure moving too little, of course, is a major question, whether we talk about the daily activity points such as 10.000 steps for normal adults, or physical therapy exercises. The elderly population tends to move too little as well. For them, the inactivity could even cause the ending of the activation bar on the curve and starting the passivation. Once that happens, there is no return. Being active during the day, especially during the workday (and most especially during the remote workday) is a very important part of the measurement for wellbeing at work too. We created the Rehaboo! Active exercise game to find an activity for the above-mentioned target audiences.

As the corona pandemic has forced large parts of the workforce to work remotely, the kids are mostly staying at home too. Schools remain mostly open during the end of 2020 lockdowns, at least in Finland. At the same time, all the sports and hobbies are cut off here, and practices have been canceled for at least five weeks. This is when we decided to help sports clubs in Finland. We made our exercise game free for the duration of the lockdown for sports clubs. Game is played on users’ laptops — it is possible with our online cloud-based AI motion sensing game.

We launched the campaign on December 2. It is continuing until January 10, 2021, while the Covid restrictions are in place. The #kidsmove campaign will have the virtual finals on 10 January with former mighty eagle Peter Vesterbacka mastering the ceremonies.

Within the first weeks, we reached over 70 large sports clubs in Finland totaling over 3,000 games together so far, with tough competition on the Leaderboard. The final awards will not be only for the best players. We are drilling into the gameplay data, looking at the most active player, team, most steps gathered, and highest score.

This is great traction and testing for a new startup, having hundreds and hundreds of players in the cloud-based online platform for the first time. Since the summer of 2020, we already gained close to 7,000 games on the cloud platform. This campaign boosts the number of games played even further.

Current Leaderboard, approximately in the middle of the campaign (P.S. 1500 points is already a pretty good score!)

The sports clubs are not our main target audience. It was important for us to help kids stay active during the pandemic. It really feels good to do good and give something like that for free, even if we don’t acquire new customers from it. Unfortunately, this time it was only for our home country, Finland, as the game is played over cloud computing. We could not afford to have a global elastic cloud service within this timeframe for a free to play. But we will be looking into scaling up to other countries, such as other Nordic countries and central Europe. Stay tuned!

There’s still almost 3 weeks on the play for competition, more and more teams are joining. The finals will be held as a virtual event on January 10th.

And last but not least, wishing y’all a very merry active Christmas, and happy new year 2021, with vaccines and squats.

Have an Active Holiday Season! :)
