The Abstract Psychology of Freedom

I think there are veritable paradoxes that relate with the very common, yet mysterious concept of freedom. For western societies this has always been a celebrated ideal, that has it’s highly esteemed, majestic roots planted deep in the rich soil of revolutionary thoughts. Afterwards there have been issues concerning the definition itself. There is no category tyranny as over time all such conventions have been abolished, our functions in society do not imperatively conquer our entire lives and there are regulated institutions for trivializing inequality. So even if the concept itself might be troublesome, as far as we can trust our governments doing their jobs we are free to act our will regarding our own lives. Looking beyond the institutions that concern themselves with watching over their members lie our own personal selves and as finite beings, we are inevitably dependent on great many things such as our jobs, our family providing us emotional support and the government ensuring that we are looked after in cases of force majeure events.

My life started high up north where you have to go a long distance before you hit your next door neighbors cabin. The abundance of those surroundings was an ideal playground for a small child to grow-up in, and having that diverse space to wander, explore and to innovate your own existence was the sort of wealth that will elevate the way in which reality is perceived. We had a shed at our backyard that would house the lumber that was used for fireplaces and a field where to plant seeds. Not self-sufficient by any means, but just enough to root you to some very basic elements of life. Having spent most of the following years in more densely populated areas, I sometimes think that to be a trade off. You will not have that level of convenience for performing various outdoor activities, but you will feel more connected to people. And more to the point, you might not get a break from that constant feeling of being connected to others, but your life might seem less stagnant. This, I think, relates to the initially presented concept of freedom.

It is not always possible to seize that personal freedom to the extent that one would hope, and mind you, this is a subjective matter. A person might feel that having to be a slave to his body’s signals and facing need to regulate water when drained out is too much to ask. Another person might embrace that as an opportunity to near one’s own personal autonomy. Both responses represent magnetism towards freedom from opposing perspectives.
The strive toward options that would make life feel less tied down by trivial challenges is intertwined with a natural need to reinvent oneself and explore. Over the course of history people around the world have been known to migrate to new territories no matter the risk or distance. To point out a more recent example of this that took place globally, people around the world have migrated a considerable deal of their lives into the web. In effect, this has produced new types of collective freedoms that were difficult to foresee only a few decades ago, ranging from information and media sharing opportunities to very handy communication capabilities.

Opening possibilities such as these will obviously show up with company. We are without exception surrounded by the mechanisms of our surroundings. It would be easy to imagine moving into a new plain, such as a new system of rules, like jumping into a pool of cold water that you will adjust to in a little while, but that’s not necessarily the case. Posting on the internet for example has had it’s ‘bad days’ regarding this phenomenon. When posting to confront a person unknown from any previous context, the fact that the person behind the avatar actually exists and is more than bits in cyberspace is quickly forgotten. Yet, positive results of free internet outweigh the bad ones, any day. Wielding social media platforms make it easy to extend your network to the kind of extent where you will probably not know all or even most of your contacts personally and reaching out to people does not have that big of a threshold. Having made note of this, it is clear that every instance in the world should not adopt one, same set of rules. Acting in the web the exact same way you do in your more material life will by no doubt be a regrettable loss, as you are not living up to the full potential of the medium. It is a very special extension to have in life, as that type of freedom might not be achieved in the more traditional extent of our lives.

Societies around the world will go on to reach more ambitious migration events, mediums and methods by sending colonies to Mars and ascending the level interaction from writing hieroglyphs on a friends wall to signifying raw meanings to an established collective consciousness. Having said this, we are effectively producing new freedoms that will revolutionize our everyday lives. Ironically, as the level of abstraction rises the challenges and veritable pitfalls that society is faced with will get more complicated demanding keener people to make observations.

Moving away from established conventions a transformation of human life can be discovered where — as the mechanisms are unfamiliar — each person participates in reinventing the workings of communal structures in a sustainable way. It provides an opportunity to envision the way out of the necessary evils of our existence and making them redundant, and this is one of the main factors in the equation. There are best and worst case scenarios to every change and this requires planning ahead. This could mean that we should not seek liberation from our ability to reason just yet, but that is a compromise I personally am willing to make in the subject of personal freedoms.
