Stories of surprise proposals and romantic gestures seem to captivate the internet. Still, one woman’s recent experience with a surprise wedding organized by her longtime boyfriend has prompted a discussion about the line between romance and autonomy and the importance of open communication in relationships.

The would-be-bride shared her experience on Reddit under the handle u/Unexpectedlymarried.

In the now-viral post, which has garnered more than 6.9k upvotes and 2.3k comments, she explained how the unexpected nuptials have complicated her relationship.

According to the original poster (OP), her boyfriend Mark, with whom she had been in a relationship for five years, invited her to a party. Unbeknownst to her, the party was actually a surprise wedding ceremony.

“As I entered the grand hall, I was completely taken aback to see all of our family, friends, and acquaintances gathered, eagerly waiting,” she recounted in her Reddit post.
