Award-winning white and amber rum profiled nationwide in Food & Wine magazine

ALBANY, N.Y. (Jan. 5, 2017) — — The Albany Distilling Company, Inc. (“ADCo”), Albany’s first licensed distillery since the beginning of Prohibition, has announced the relaunch of its award-winning Quackenbush Still House Rum.

Quackenbush Amber Rum

The rum, named after the Quackenbush Still House that existed near ADCo’s production facility more than 300 years ago, is made from Albany municipal water, yeast, and fancy-grade Caribbean molasses. The rum now features with new packaging for its amber style and is featured this month in Food & Wine magazine as one of their ‘spirits of the year’ selections. Both the white and amber are sold in 750ml bottles.

“Rum distilling in Albany is a rich tradition with its roots in the pre-revolutionary era. We honor the Quackenbush family’s early contributions to our industry through producing a smooth, rich spirit we hope they would be proud of,” said John Curtin, co-founder and co-owner.

Quackenbush Still House Original Albany Rum

The Quackenbush Still House opened its doors in 1758 and operated through the American Revolution and the War of 1812. The construction of the Erie Canal in the mid 1820’s would bury the distillery, now abandoned. Its history would be forgotten, with what remaining memory eviscerated from consciousness through Prohibition.

In the early 2000s during the construction of the Quackenbush Parking Garage, construction workers discovered wooden vats beneath the dry, sandy soil. Archeologists were brought on-site and after several months of excavation, a remarkably well-preserved Quackenbush Still House emerged. Today, visitors can view two of the reconstructed vats at the New York State Museum.
