Hundreds turn out for inaugural grilled cheese festival in Downtown Troy

TROY, N.Y. (Nov. 19, 2017) — Fresh Greens at the Park, an Albany breakfast and lunch café, took home both Judge’s Cheese and People’s Cheese awards at the inaugural Melt N’ Toast grilled cheese festival that took place on Saturday, Nov. 18.

Hundreds turned out at Takk House to sample and enjoy grilled cheese sandwiches from seven participating restaurants from across the Capital Region. Restaurants, in addition to Fresh Greens, included Slidin’ Dirty, The Cheese Traveler, Merv’s Meatless, Dinner Demon at The Beer Diviner, Sunhee’s Farm + Kitchen, and Muddaddy Flats.

“We’re stoked about the turnout and reception we received for Melt N’ Toast and look forward to continuing to bring these kinds of innovative events to Upstate New York,” said Ty Versocki, partner and director of events and operations for Relentless.

Judge’s Cheese was determined by a panel that included Yelp’s Daniel Berman and WRGB CBS-6’s Emily DeFeciani. People’s Cheese was selected by popular ballot by attendees.

The winning recipe consisted of cream cheese, provolone, tomatoes, basil, balsamic glaze, and garlic butter.

“When I woke up Saturday morning, all I wanted to do was two things. One: win the first ever grilled cheese competition in the Capital Region. Two: marry the love of my life, Danielle Gordon,” said Shawn Starring, owner, Fresh Greens at the Park. “Well, I can’t say it all went perfect, and many people thought I was crazy for doing anything else on my wedding day. With a few little things that went wrong — the two big ones went right. It was an awesome wedding gift to be granted both People’s and Judge’s Cheese. Add to that a great night out with my close family following the wedding ceremony and I couldn’t be happier. Looking forward to next year’s Melt N’ Toast. Until then, keep it cheesy Capital Region.”
