Park Playhouse announces the cancellation of summer production of Evita

Musical previously scheduled to play in Washington Park in June & July

ALBANY, N.Y. (April 8, 2020) — Park Playhouse has announced that their summer production of the Andrew Lloyd Weber and Tim Rice rock opera, Evita, has been cancelled. The change to the Playhouse’s 32nd Season is in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on the Capital District community.

“This is a very difficult but important decision to protect the health and well-being of our community” said Owen Smith, Producing Artistic Director of Park Playhouse. “Our first concern is certainly patron safety,” Smith continued, “and the current uncertainty around timelines for continued social distancing and restrictions on public gatherings played a significant role in this determination as well. Our Broadway-style summer shows take months to effectively plan and produce. I am confident that we are making the right choice given the current circumstances, as disappointing as this may be to all the adults, student and families attending of our performances.” Playhouse management and Board of Directors unanimously made the decision to cancel the production at this time. The performers and musicians scheduled to play the production for the Playhouse have been notified of the change.

During this period of social distancing due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Park Playhouse is expanding its virtual arts and education programming to the community by providing free online enrichments activities on their social media channels. More information about these activities is available at or

Any further changes to the company’s 32nd Season are pending further guidance from local and state officials and will be announced at a later date as necessary. In addition, titles for the company’s 33rd Season in 2020/2021 will be announced in May.

“Hopefully, the time will come soon when we can get back in the rehearsal studio and get back to doing what we love: providing first-class, free and affordable theatre to the Capital Region community,” Smith said. “For now, our hearts go out to the artists, businesses, community and public at large affected by the COVID-19 virus, and we will continue to bring the magic of live theatre to students and audiences from afar… we wish everyone to stay healthy!”
