Ridesharing apps to operate in Upstate New York starting at 12:01 a.m. Thursday

ALBANY, N.Y. (June 28, 2017) — The Capital Region Ridesharing Coalition, an alliance of businesses, residents, and community leaders who support the legalization of ridesharing in Upstate New York, is thrilled to announce that the long awaited ridesharing services, Uber and Lyft, will be officially operational in the Capital Region as of 12:01 a.m. on Thursday, June 29.

The ease of transportation that these services provide will likely contribute to increased tourism, a decrease in drunk driving instances, and will even create flexible job opportunities. Ridesharing is the most convenient way to take advantage of all that downtown has to offer and we look forward to seeing the vast impact it will have on our community

“It’s been fun working with the members of the Capital Region Ridesharing Coalition, and tonight we celebrate. This new form of transit is gonna change the way we get around, introducing a new culture of connectivity to our area,” said Vic Christopher, co-chair, Capital Region Ridesharing Coalition.

“Ridesharing has been a long time coming and I’m very proud to have been a part of the process of getting it here. Whether you’re going out to dinner, or getting home from the bar, it’s reassuring to know that there is now a safe and convenient transportation option out there,” said Matt Baumgartner, co-chair, Capital Region Ridesharing Coalition.

Residents should keep an eye out for deals from local establishments that are celebrating the arrival of ridesharing. All three Wolff’s Biergarten locations in Albany, Schenectady, and Troy, are offering $2 off of the first draft purchased by each customer with proof of ridesharing use. If ridesharing is utilized to go to any two of their locations, users will be eligible to have their first draft upgraded from a half liter to a full liter for free, and those who travel to all three locations will get a $25 gift card to Wolff’s. There will also be a party at The Bradley located at 28 Fourth Street, Troy, NY, 12180 from 12:01 a.m. to 2 a.m. to celebrate the arrival of ridesharing.

Another thing to keep in mind for first time users is that these services often offer special deals! For Lyft users, it is possible to earn up to $20 in Lyft credits for first time riders. Those who use Uber for the first time can get a $15 credit towards their first ride.
