Torrential monsoon rains that began earlier this month have intensified over the past few days, which has triggered widespread flooding across several districts in northern and northeastern regions of Bangladesh. The flash floods have left thousands of people displaced, numerous villages submerged, and critical infrastructure damaged.

Local authorities report that at least 50,000 families have been displaced, with many seeking refuge in temporary shelters set up in schools, government buildings, and community centers. The full extent of the damage is still being assessed, but early estimates suggest that thousands of hectares of crops have been destroyed, dealing a severe blow to local farmers and the broader agricultural economy. There have been at least 23 fatalities so far.

“The recent flash flooding in Bangladesh is impacting close to 5.7 million people across 11 districts and the needs are increasing by the hour. It is important to continue to support the response efforts to ensure those impacted receive the aid they need and to avoid a prolong crisis,” shared Araif Yusuff, IRUSA Director of Programs.

Islamic Relief USA is launching an emergency response in Bangladesh to distribute multi-purpose cash assistance to flood-affected communities to purchase needed items including food, water, medicine, and other essentials. Donate now.
