Thirty years ago, in 1994, Nelson Mandela became the first president of South Africa, a moment in history that changed the trajectory of the country. After his presidency, Mandela engaged in several philanthropic activities.

Every year, we commemorate Mandela’s life on July 18, his birthday. At IRUSA, we believe in keeping his legacy alive by fighting for justice, being compassionate, and doing what is right no matter the cost. Here are some reflections from our staff on Mandela’s legacy:

“There is no passion to be found playing small — in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living.” ~Nelson Mandela

“These profound thoughts from President Mandela is a reminder that we must be the change we seek. Oftentimes, you can be your own worst enemy not realizing the value of what you have to offer in life. We have the answer or solution to the goal that we are looking for — it’s right in the mirror. It starts with you.

“‘Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves.’ The Glorious Quran, 13:11

“President Mandela didn’t just talk this, he walked this even while being imprisoned for nearly three decades. 30 years ago in 1994, Mandela made history by becoming South Africa’s first Black president to put an end to apartheid and to raise society’s consciousness on human rights and dignity.

“The whole world might not know the legend President Mandela that we have come to love if he decided it was best to play small and live a life less than what he was capable of.

“Personally, it is something I try to remind myself of all the time. I believe we all have a gift to share with the world. We just need to activate our light and treasure. Until we recognize and appreciate the best in ourselves, we can’t offer the best to the world,” Mohamed Ali, IRUSA’s Senior Specialist for Public Affairs, Research, and Advocacy.

Naeem Muhammad, IRUSA’s Director of Funds Development shared that: “I can still remember the day Nelson Mandela was released. I was at university watching him being received and cheered on by the people of South Africa. His life reminds me to be patient and resilient in the face of adversity. He gave up everything for the freedom of his people. Through his truth and reconciliation work reminds me that all people should be heard, given respect, and to seek justice.”

One great way to honor Nelson Mandela Day is by supporting communities in South Africa. Mandela’s legacy as a peacemaker brought progress and hope, but the fight for justice continues. Still recovering from the effects of the global pandemic, the economy in South Africa is struggling and poverty has reached levels not seen in over a decade.

Islamic Relief USA has been working on long-term development in South Africa. A few of our interventions include access to water, healthcare, and education. To learn more and donate, visit irusa.org/southafrica.
