The Tragic Spectacle of Republican Ineptitude

With the failed impeachment of Alejandro Mayorkas, the House GOP has proven once again they can’t be trusted with governance.

Once again the GOP majority in the House have managed to make a fool of themselves in spectacular fashion. After making a great deal of fuss and feathers about impeaching Alejandro Mayorkas, Biden’s Secretary of Homeland Security, they couldn’t even manage to get the votes needed to make it official. As numerous news outlets have pointed out, this is quite a failure and a setback for a party that has clearly pinned a great deal on not only embarrassing Biden but also on making immigration into a cudgel with which they can beat him throughout the 2024 election year.

The ultimate vote was, it turns out, quite close, and had it not been for Republican holdouts and some unusual circumstances we would have had to endure yet more ridiculous bit of political theater in which the GOP pretended to care about immigration and the border. Of course, there is always the possibility hat they’ll try this whole exercise over again — Speaker Mike Johnson has said as much — but given how inept they have been with almost every other aspect of their supposed agenda, I wouldn’t bet on the next effort being particularly successful, either.
