Culminations

Remembering the Roxy

In the first week of December, work on the project has reached a fever pitch. Everyone is putting the finishing touches on their own separate pieces. Audio is cut, pictures are cleaned, and articles are in progress. Each member of the class is entrenched in their own work, divided by coffee cups, computer screens, and headphones.

The mood is high.

It is interesting to look back on the progress that we have made over the course of the semester. The list of people that we attempted to contact contains dozens of names. We’ve looked at tax records, talked to local historians, and interviewed Macon citizens that have memories of the Roxy. In all, we pursued more than 55 leads.

And still we have unanswered questions.

For all of the progress that we made, there is much that we failed to learn. The project has been arduous. Few people remember the interior or the building. Many proved difficult or impossible to contact. Make no mistake, the various leads have not been easy to track down, and occasionally they have been contradictory.

However, there is no denying the importance of the Roxy to its patrons. It served as a meeting place and entertainment center. It was where you went on dates, to party to the latest music, or to enjoy a film. It was a landmark.

We only hope that we can show you.
