Remix Release 0.11.1

The Big News

  • Automatic migration of files to Workspaces has been turned off. So you cannot see your current files unless you migrate them.
  • To see your current files in a Workspace, you need to click the Migrate button — see Manual Migration Instructions below
  • Download button to save all files stored in your local storage
  • Remix IDE will use an opt-in version of Matomo Analytics

Manually migrate your files from the browser folder to the default Workspace folder

In our previous release v0.11.0, we introduced Workspaces. Upon loading files were automatically migrated to the default workspace folder.

Because of some issues in the automatic migration, we turned that off.

However, now when using Remix IDE, your files will not be automatically migrated to File Explorer.

It will look like they are gone.

While they have disappeared, they are not gone.

Restore them by using the Migration tool on the Home Tab.
See instructions below.

From now on, you need at least one Workspace — that is if need to access to file System or if plugin you use does so. So either manually migrate your files or just make a workspace if there are none.

Manual Migration Instructions

To get files that were in the browser folder over the a Workspace folder, you’ll need to do the following steps:

Hit the Migrate old filesystem to workspace button toward the bottom of the Remix Home page.

Then the migration modal will come up.

  • Download and Migrate will download your current files to your downloads folder and then it will migrate your files to a default workspace.
  • Migrate will just copy the files to a default workspace.
  • Cancel will do nothing — but you cannot run the file explorer with just the browser folder — you’ll need to create a workspace.

Fixes & Loading

With the release of v0.11.0 a couple of days ago, some users reported that Remix was not loading. The issue had been related to the automatic migration of files to the default Workspace folder.

The automatic migration is now turned off.

The automatic migration copied the files to the default Workspace folder. In some operating systems/browser combinations this did not work. Either Remix did not load or the files were not brought in.

But the files were copied — so they still should be in your browser storage

  • To get you old files that had been in your browser folder, toward the bottom of the homepage, click the Download all files button. (see the image above)
  • To migrate your old files in the browser folder to a Workspace folder, click the Migrate old filesystem to workspace button.

In Remix IDE v0.11.0 and above, the file system is organized with Workspaces. If you see one is not there, click the + button to make one.

The Download all Files button

Have you ever written a few dozen fabulous contracts and had them all in browser storage and wanted to download them all at once? If so, then this button is for you.

Excellent for piece of mind.

Linking to a GIST with a URL

We made a small update — so that when a GIST is loaded via a url parameter like this:

https://remix.ethereum.org/#gist=df41184ec30b3702750d21b37ccbdc00

You will see the GIST in the Workspace named gist-sample

Matomo Analytics in Remix

To improve the UX & UI and the general usability of the Remix IDE, we will begin to use an opt-in version of Matomo, an open source analytics platform.

We realize that your privacy must be protected. No personally identifiable info (PII) will be collected. See more on our blog post on the Matomo.

Our goal is to understand about how many users we have, what plugins people are using, what is not getting used, what is not being used to its full potential.

To Reiterate

  • Remix will not collect sensitive data from users.
  • Data collected will be anonymous. Individual data points are not collected so we are in compliance with GDPR regulations. And no personally identifiable information (PII) will be collected.
  • Remix will only use the data to improve our User Experience & User Interface by understanding how people use the IDE.
  • This will be an opt-in program — meaning that you need to give your consent before we can collect anything.

You can change your choice in the Settings panel.

Thank You Esteemed Users

Please report any problems you see in Remix. Also send us your suggestions about any changes you’d like to see in Remix or any functionality you’d like to be added.

We strive to make the IDE more convenient and easy to use. You can reach us on Twitter, Gitter, and via email (remix@ethereum.org) TIA!
