Artist Bio

I’ve moved around quite a lot throughout my life. I was born in Georgia, and have since lived in Cincinnati, Dallas/Ft Worth, Southern California, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Brooklyn, and now Berlin. I began taking art seriously as a Film student in San Francisco, immersing myself deeply in the creative process and the art of storytelling. Upon graduation,I moved to Los Angeles to explore my passion for filmmaking, and developed what I found was an innate talent for film editing. This creative process allowed me to weave narratives together, serving as a transformative experience that led me down the path of teaching myself 2D and 3D animation.

Animation software was a revelation. It reconnected me with my roots in directing and filmmaking, offering a more accessible platform than traditional filmmaking could. This new medium placed the creative tools and control directly in my hands. For the past 15 years, I’ve been freelancing as a 3D artist and motion designer in New York, and now Berlin. These roles have allowed me to blend my love for film and animation. Animation software has served as a bridge between my filmmaking roots, and an accessible means to articulate my visions. It’s a revolution I see mirrored in my current use of AI technology.

Running parallel to my digital ventures, I’ve consistently nurtured my love for analog photography. My experiences shooting on 35mm and Medium Format film have been a constant companion, a grounding reminder of the raw and unfiltered beauty in capturing moments as they naturally unfold.

With the advancement of AI tools does the approach of an artist change?

I believe it largely depends on the artist and their chosen medium. I can only speak for myself in saying that with the advancement of AI tools, AI is the approach, so not only does it change my approach as an artist, it is an approach all its own.

How do emotion and passion play into your art?

It really depends on the day. Sometimes, my emotions set the tone for my work; I either embrace and express that emotion, or divert my focus away from it. As for passion, it’s the driving force behind my creativity. It could be a deep desire to create imagery that captivates me, or the sheer joy of immersing myself in the artistic flow — a rare and transcendent state that few experiences in life can evoke.

What are you seeing with the current generation of AI tools for video?

People are experimenting with every new tool, and coming up with innovative results. While some view AI tools as just enhanced filters, there’s a growing movement towards new creative opportunities, entertainment avenues, and revenue streams. It’s genuinely exciting to watch as this technology reshapes the audio-visual landscape.

Any advice to artists on how to think about this accelerating change created by AI tools?

I believe artists should simply be open. Embrace experimenting with and harnessing what these new tools can provide for your own work, productivity, and even satisfaction; and participate in dreaming up what is next.

How do you incorporate artificial intelligence into your artistic process? What inspired you to explore this intersection between art and technology?

I incorporate AI at almost every step of my creative process. I make a series of decisions that guide the algorithms. However, at the end of the day, I have to relinquish some control to the model and attempt to shape the results it produces.

I’ve always been captivated by emerging technologies that not only enhance my efficiency as an artist but also expand my perspective and comprehension of the world. It was between late 2022 and early 2023 that I felt these tools had reached a level of maturity allowing me to effectively harness them in my work.

In time, my approach shifted. Instead of merely using these tools to mimic reality, I began to employ them as an unconventional lens — one that offers a unique perspective, perhaps challenging common perceptions, but still resonating on a deeply human level. This transformation mirrors the enchantment I found in filmmaking years ago, a passion that continues to drive my artistic pursuits today.

Could you provide some insight into the specific AI techniques or algorithms you employ in your artwork? How do you choose which ones to use for different projects?

My curiosity with AI grew alongside becoming more technically literate with Stable Diffusion. I soon discovered Deforum, an animation extension of Stable Diffusion that I used to create the works in this collection. This realization sparked the idea of merging my love for photography, passion for visually compelling imagery, and knowledge of filmmaking and animation into an experience that hadn’t been explored to the degree I envisioned.

Through experimentation, I’ve refined my techniques along the way. It’s been an exciting journey of pushing boundaries and finding new ways to produce unique vignettes in a harmonious and captivating manner. For this project, I’ve fine-tuned 4 different diffusion models on personally trained datasets. Each dataset is unique to my work alone, which means the generative model and I create irreproducible imagery together. Through ‘De La Naught,’ I aimed to present a vision that showcases the transformative power of AI in the realm of photography and animation, offering an immersive and captivating experience.

I will remain open to using any tool that I deem fit and strive to dream up new ways to contemplate and visualize thoughts, feelings, ideas, and beauty.

“De La Naught” was such an iconic example of video and motion in AI art. How were you inspired to create it? Are you continuing to experiment with motion and video in your work? What are the most exciting projects or collections for you in the last 12 months?

Thank you! I find inspiration in the profound ebb and flow of life’s extreme highs and lows. These contrasting experiences serve as a constant reminder of the intricate tapestry that defines our human journey. They empower me to embrace significant changes and transformative shifts based on both positive and challenging events. This understanding serves as the broad framework for my thought process, and the experience of creating this collection emerged from it.

I’m certainly continuing to experiment with motion and video in my work, and I’m eagerly anticipating sharing the progression from this project to the next soon.

A few of the most exciting projects I enjoyed in the last year were QQL, Life in West America, and the tremendous work done by Fellowship on the Post Photographic Perspectives collections.

In what ways does AI enhance your creative expression and push the boundaries of traditional artistic techniques? Are there any unique outcomes or artistic possibilities that AI enables for you?

The integration of AI into photography has not only expanded its capabilities beyond merely capturing and recording light, but it has also transformed it into a process involving the creation and manipulation of light. The resulting work transcends what was previously imaginable, introducing new dimensions of creativity that would be impossible to achieve without the aid of AI. This powerful collaboration between human vision and AI-driven tools opens up a world of possibilities, allowing artists to craft images that break through the limitations of traditional processes and showcase the true potential of this evolving medium. Simply put, AI was essential to “De La Naught”. The project could not exist without it.

What impact do you believe AI will have on the future of art? Do you see it as a complementary tool to traditional artistic practices, or do you envision a more transformative role for AI in the creative realm?

I see AI tools for creativity in the same light as other essential tools I use daily, such as 3D software. I didn’t code that software myself, but it is indispensable to my creative process. Without it, the work I do simply wouldn’t exist. Just like paint is essential to painting, a camera and film are vital to photography and filmmaking, and editing software is crucial for sound production. AI tools are no different. In fact, AI goes beyond what was previously possible. It possesses the capacity to assist in the creation of any medium, unlocking previously unimaginable avenues of artistic expression. The possibilities are limitless, and in some cases unimaginable.

Beyond the functionality of these tools, AI holds tremendous promise for marginalized communities; the less fortunate, individuals with disabilities, young artists, and those who have struggled to find the means or physical skills to express themselves artistically. AI creation provides a powerful outlet, breaking down barriers and empowering untapped talent.

AI will not replace human creativity but amplify and enhance it, ushering us into a new era of artistic exploration.
