Basic math yields impactful analysis.

Quick estimates of fleet impacts and financial requirements are central to Remix. But how do we do it? Here’s a breakdown of the operational statistics and calculations that power Remix.

Service Hours

Service hours are critical for determining the operational costs of your service. The calculation evaluates how many hours a day your service is running and the number of buses running during each service window.

Service hours are the number of hours your service is available to the public.

Layover

Layover is a map-wide (same for every route) setting, which is displayed as the total layover time for a roundtrip. As a default, we’ve set this as 10% of the roundtrip runtime, but you can change this to a different percentage or even a minute minimum.

Layover can be adjusted to reflect your agency’s regulations.

Runtime, Speed, and Distance

Runtime, speed, and distance are interdependent variables in Remix calculations. If you increase the distance of your route without changing your runtime, it means your bus must be traveling at a faster speed.

Adjust runtime or speed or distance, and the remaining two will update.

Buses and Wiggle

The number of buses needed to run a service is calculated by determining the active time for your bus (a sum of runtime and layover) and dividing by the frequency of service. How much additional service could you provide without needing to add another bus to your route? Find out by checking the wiggle.

Wiggle is a great way to evaluate the efficiency of your schedule.

In the example above, we need two buses to meet the headway we set. Wiggle is an expression of the slack in our schedule. In this example, a round trip (runtime + layover) could take up to 13.6 additional minutes before the third bus is required to meet our headway.

Costs

A basic evaluation of daily cost is determined by knowing the number of service hours you are operating and a per hour operational cost. If needed for your agency, you can add in a one time capital cost for each additional bus, a per-mile cost, or special hourly costs. Annual costs depend on the daily costs multiplied out by the number of days set in your calendar.

Updating calendar settings will affect your annual costs.
