I always heard about Stoicism and how magnificent it could be in people’s lives. I’m fond of philosophy, so I looked for books that could introduce me to this subject and show me “the magic” behind such an old and, at the same time, modern way of looking at things.

“Lessons in Stoicism” by John Sellars is far from being any self-help book. The author instead writes about the beginning of the Stoicism movement going through the history and philosophers behind it. John clarifies the premises of Stoicism connecting it with modern world situations.

“What aspects of your life do you really control? Do you control whether you get ill or not? Do you ever decide to be involved in an accident? You might be able to influence them in various ways, but can you ever guarantee that they will turn out in your favour? Questions such as these were a central preoccupation of the Stoics.”

The book brings themes like “our place in nature”, “life and death” and you will learn that it’s possible to face adversities with serenity if you stop to look at things from the Stoicism point of view.
