This book is, more than anything, about honesty. The main character describes his daily life during the Second World War in Poland intimately and sincerely.
He shares details about his job, affective relationships and makes it clear that he is only interested in saving his own skin.
His selfish behaviour makes it difficult for the reader to sympathize with him. He really doesn’t care and doesn’t even pretend to.
In my opinion, the book does not have many high points.
