Envy, lies, selfishness, narcissism, loneliness, anger, and even psychopathy are some adjectives I would use to describe “The Talented Mr. Ripley” by Patricia Highsmith. The classic was written in 1955.

The book is about a young American, Tom Ripley, who lives in New York and does what he can to survive. He is always involved in minor offenses and not really happy with his life. One day, he receives an unexpected invitation from Herbert Greenleaf, a wealthy shipping magnate. He asks if Ripley can travel to Italy and convince his son, Dickie Greenleaf, to return home and visit his sick mother.

Ripley didn’t know Dickie so well, but he couldn’t refuse an opportunity to visit Europe and be paid for it. What looked like an innocent trip ends up putting Ripley face to face with his internal conflicts.

Feeling often desperate for attention, he ends up getting involved in several crimes, which makes us, as readers, increasingly curious about the destiny of the main character.

What talent is behind the mysterious Mr. Ripley?
