George Harrar — now and then!

Jenkintown native George Harrar wrote the novel Spinning Man which has been adapted by Lionsgate films into a motion picture starring Guy Pearce, Pierce Brosnan, and Minnie Driver. The film will be shown at the Hiway Theater on Saturday, May 5 at 4:00, and Harrar will participate in Q&A after the screening.

George Harrar was raised in Jenkintown and graduated from Jenkintown High School in 1967, as did his wife, Linda, a documentary filmmaker who has made more than a dozen NOVA shows for PBS. The Harrars now live in Massachusetts, but are in the area for the JHS All-Class Reunion.

Spinning Man is the first of Harrar’s works to become a motion picture, and a filming of a French-language adaptation of his novel Reunion at Red Paint Bay just wrapped in Marseilles. He has written seven novels for different age groups — from middle-grade readers through teen and adult — and has had a dozen short stories published, including “The 5:22,” which won the Carson McCullers Prize and was picked by writer Amy Tam for Best American ShortStories, 1999.

The New York Times declared the novel Spinning Man to be “elegant and unnerving.” A reissue of the book, featuring the movie poster as a cover, will be on sale soon on Amazon. A limited number of the previous edition will be available at the theater at the screening on May 5 for sale and signing by Harrar.
