Gus Van Sant has had an illustrious career in indie cinema with highlights including The Drugstore Cowboy, Good Will Hunting, and Milk. His newest is another biopic about the life and struggles of quadriplegic irreverent cartoonist John Callahan.

Joaquin Phoenix gives yet another transformative performance as Callahan who suffered from years of alcohol dependency before seeking treatment. During his recovery he discovered a talent for drawing witty and macabre comics that landed him in some major publications. Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far On Foot explores the artist’s life during some of his most trying days, yet the film always maintains a positive outlook despite its harrowing circumstances.

We have come to expect powerful performances from Phoenix, but one of the most surprising elements of the film comes from comedic actor Jonah Hill who expertly blends comedy and tragedy as Callahan’s sponsor Donnie. These two performances, combined with Van Sant’s supremely talented eye for capturing quiet moments, make for a wholly unique and fascinating biography.
