If so, what can you do about that?

Let’s get the numbers in first . How likely is it for your children to have acne, if you have acne? The answer to that is — Very Likely!

The offspring of a person with acne stands to have acne(pimples) in 8 out of 10 cases. The risk increases if both parents have acne.

Also where there is a positive family history of acne in either parent, the acne can be more difficult to treat. It may require longer periods of treatment to achieve good results, and there is a greater risk of recurrence.

Acne is troublesome, but scarring from acne is a much bigger problem. Here, acne creams and medications may not be enough, but procedural treatments may be required to lessen the scarring.

So early treatment of acne becomes necessary to reduce the chances of scarring.

1. Watch the diet.

To get a headstart on prevention, diet management is a good place to start. If there is a positive family history of acne, consciously avoid getting your children used to high calorie, high glycemic index foods on a routine basis.

Avoid giving them chocolates, cakes and pastries — except on occasion. Not on a daily basis, and definitely not, to manage a tantrum.

Go strong on fibre from a very early age, and lead them by example, by following a low glycemic, healthy diet yourself.

Avoid processed food as far as possible, and refuse to give regular room for carbonated drinks in your fridge.

Partition the calories in your diet such that the breakfast is the heaviest meal and dinner the most lean.

2. Get Moving.

The second step in anticipatory prevention of acne for your children, is to keep the physical activity up, and avoid long hours in front of the TV, as he principal source of entertainment.

Encourage outdoor activities as a regular part of life, to prevent and/or delay the onset of metabolic complications later on in life, especially if their work might require them to be sedentary.

3. Early to Bed.

Lastly, a good sleep hygiene also helps in keeping the metabolism happy. Early to bed is a very good habit to teach the children, while following that can do wonders for our tired, work hassled mind and body.

Many repair processes happen in the body, when the cortisol calms down in sleep. Allowing these natural repair processes, will give the metabolism a much better chance at combating acne.

We are in the era of epigenetics, where it is possible to influence our genes towards favourable outcomes, primarily through diet and physical activity. With a little foresight and commitment, it is possible to give our children a much better chance at managing/ beating acne!
