Industry research launched last week at the House of Commons revealed that the outdoor events industry is worth more than £30 billion. According to the study — conducted by Bournemouth University on behalf of the Events Industry Forum (EIF) — there were 141.5 million visits to outdoor events in 2018, with visitors spending £39.5 million.
The research — divided outdoor events into five categories — music events, arts and culture, fairs and shows, recreation and corporate — found that outdoor events contributed £30.4 billion to the UK economy and supported 589,000 full-time jobs. In particular, outdoor corporate events, which bring people together for corporate or business reasons such as product launches and experiential events, have a gross value of £534,000,000 and are attended by 3.9 million people each year.
The figures clearly show a healthy sector, bursting with positivity. This is echoed by the more than 4,400 interviewed for the study, which agreed that activities at outdoor events are of good quality (79 per cent), event sites are clear and accessible (77 per cent) and events offer invaluable opportunities for engagement (78 per cent).
However, the report also highlighted a few concerns that organisers should be aware of, as respondents chose to raise fears surrounding waste (11 per cent) and over commercialisation (13 per cent). The researchers believe that organisers should bear these concerns in mind when planning.
