Everyone’s bought and sold things on Craigslist and eBay before. Many of us have also tried out Facebook Marketplace and other classified sites. But did you know that there are large, thriving marketplace communities right on Twitter?

One such community centers around Sports Cards and Collectibles, collectively known as #TheHobby. Thousands of collectors and hobbyists tweet out what they’re looking to buy or sell, and hundreds of deals are made daily, right on Twitter through replies and DMs.

Reputation Drives Sales

Most established marketplaces (think eBay and Etsy) have their own seller reputation system. eBay sellers have feedback scores and positive feedback percentages, while Etsy buyers rate the stores they’ve bought from. Gaining buyer trust is huge, and sellers with strong reputations capture most of the sales.

With the Sports Cards and Collectibles community on Twitter, much of this trust comes by way of personal relationships people have built over time. It’s a very effective system when the community is tight-knit, but as the audience and activity grow, the community becomes a target for fraud and scams.

One notable member of the community we’ve talked quite closely with is @CardConnector. He’s the ultimate resource when it comes to connecting buyers and sellers, and he’s also laser focused on keeping the community safe and happy. He’s seen a recent uptick in scams on Twitter, and when we approached him with an idea to add a reputation layer to improve the buying/selling experience on Twitter, he became an instant supporter of our latest feature.

Welcome, @OnReplin!

Starting today, Replin users can connect their Twitter account to their profile and start mentioning @OnReplin in their tweets. This will send an automatic reply with a summary of their reputation:

Bonus: Connect with eBay to import selling history and give your profile a head start!

All it takes is a simple @ mention in your tweet:

In the automated reply, buyers will see your Replin profile link where they can take a closer look at your reviews and pay you directly through PayPal. Payments are handled as Goods & Services, so both parties are eligible for Buyer and Seller Protection.

How do I start?

  1. Sign up with an existing PayPal account to get started (all payments are handled securely through PayPal). We’re on Google Play and the App Store as well.
  2. Once logged in, go to the “Connected Accounts” section of your settings and Connect to Twitter. This part’s important because it verifies that your Replin and Twitter accounts are linked.
  3. Lastly, follow @OnReplin and mention us in a tweet to see it in action!
