Protesters rally in support of Walter Scott as the policeman who shot him now faces murder charges.

Yesterday afternoon, video surfaced of a police shooting that had taken place last Saturday in North Charleston, South Carolina. Police officer Michael T. Slager, who is white, had claimed that he had shot Walter Scott, who is African American, in self defense. The video told an entirely different story, in which the officer shot Scott in the back while he was running away. Officer Slager was arrested on murder charges after the video’s release.

This morning, protesters rallied in North Charleston in solidarity with Walter Scott’s family.

While protesters gathered, Internet users expressed their own outrage.

Back at the protest rally in North Charleston, speakers addressed the crowd and gathering press.

Over at the Huffington Post, they envisioned what the reporting surrounding Walter Scott’s death would have been if the video had never surfaced.

As millions of people today are exposed to images of Walter Scott running for his life, it’s worth pausing to remember him as his family and friends did.
