When people want to visit Belgium, instantly they think of Brussels. Of course, it is the capital of the country and a beautiful place to visit. However, Belgium can offer more than just that city. Belgium has history.

1. Belfry tower, Ghent

Built by the own citizens in 1380, and located in the heart of the city, this tower tried to show how rich the people were. Because, if we think about the past, when somebody was rich, he tried to show this by creating big buildings, most often churches or belfries. Also it had the function of warm the people if there was a fire, because all houses were made of wood.

2. Bruges town hall

Built in 1376, and in the centre of the city, this gothic artwork demonstrates how rich people were in Bruges in the XIV Century. On arrival, you will find 2 big rooms: the first one is the gothic room, in which we have a lot of artwork. And the second one is the historical room, in which you can find documents and art about the history of the city.

3. Saint Peter’s Church, Leuven

This gothic construction, was built around 1400, and you can find it close to the market place. The church is one of the few temples in the world which has the title of Magisterial Church, which means that all the canons have to be doctors in theology.

4. Saint Aubin’s cathedral, Namur

With Italian influence, this building is the only cathedral in Belgium in late baroque academic style. Built in 1755 it is considered to be an important patrimony of the Wallonian region. The curiosity is that it has a Romanic tower just on the occidental side, that has survived from the XIIth century until today.

5. Grand Place, Brussels

I started this article saying that there is more to see in Belgium than only Brussels. But, of course, the Grand Place should be visited if you want to enjoy your stay in Belgium 100%. It is considered one of the most famous squares in the world, and has the title of World Heritage Site of Unesco.
