Every country has it´s own musicians and it´s own style preferences in music. This article I will raise your awareness for 5 famous Belgian musicians in different branches, who also had an international impact.

1. Jean “Toots” Thielemans — Modern Jazz

Toots was famous for playing the guitar, for his whistling skills and especially for playing the humble harmonica. He has made the harmonica an accepted instrument in jazz. He had a long life and died at the age of 94 in 2017. During the end of WWII he became interested in Jazz music, just 5 years later he became a full-time musician for life.

2. Stromae — Hip-Hop / Electro music

Since the year 2000 Paul Van Haver made Hip-Hop music under the name OpsMaestro. Then, he started his electro music career under the name Stromae in 2009 and his most famous tracks are Alors on dance, Papaoutai and Te quiero. His songs are in French but are also famous in Austria and the rest of Europe.

3. Lara Fabian — Pop, Singer, Songwriter

Some media are naming her the new Céline Dion. She took part in the Eurovision Song Contest for Luxemburg when she was 18 in 1988. Most of her songs are in French but she also published 2 English albums. She has the Canadian citizenship and lives in Brussels and Móntreal.

4. Bobbejaan Schoepen — Country music

Bobbejaan was a famous Belgian singer and entertainer. He was one of the first people in Europe who tried and succeeded in the genre of Country Music. He sold more than 5 million copies of his songs and is the founder of the amusement park Bobbejaanland. He lived from 1925 till 2010 and became one of the 200 richest people in Belgium.

5. Praga Khan — Componist, Singer, DJ

The outgoing, shrill and excentric music producer Maurice Engelen got international fame in the new-beat-scene and is also known under the names Maurizzio De Angelo and Somora. He has his own music label and gave contracts to Belgian ESC (Eurovision Song Contest) participants.
