Today’s television world produces program formats never seen before that can create an atmosphere of controversy and debate among its viewers. This problem is currently on in Belgium, where there are critical questions about the new VTM program ‘I want a child’, on co-parenting.

Pick and choose your battle

This reality show is presented by Dina Tersago, who is looking for intended parents who choose the conscious co-parenting. The intention of ‘I want a child’ is to make the audience see what occurs with the problem of co-parenthood and the lack of legality that exists.

The chance that this program offers to make it possible for people who cannot have children makes the program a sensational opportunity to fulfill people’s dream but, is it necessary to expose this problem on television?

According to children’s right commissioner Caroline Vrijens, there are numerous reality shows about buying a house or about finding a partner but the fact that there is a program that is focused in having a child is something completely different.

Many programs are only focused on having a large audience and getting famous, but they don’t think about the problem it can cause in society. However, in I want a child, despite this controversy and its background, it can be very useful because co-parenting already exists and people who want to have a child are going to do it, either seeking contact through a website on the internet or via a fertility clinic.

Furthermore, if we take this point out of context, it can also be thought that they use this topic as serious entertainment even if the objective is another. We can see how babies are used as a mere product.

In addition, this modern way of forming a family makes us face a great debate which contains disadvantage and advantages.

On the one hand, if we talk about the advantages of forming a co-parenting family, it is one of the best ways to unleash your feelings and start a new life, without being alone and feeling supported to become good parents. Besides the fact that it helps the days of the child because for them they want the greatest stability, well-being and all the love.

On the other hand, as for the disadvantages, we can say that the child at one point in life may suffer instability since the situation that his parents are separated from married life. They have different lifestyles or geographic remoteness. In addition, the child could suffer a certain type of reproach difficult to assimilate since it is complex to understand the construction of the family.

It is important to consider these advantages and disadvantages of the partnership since when it comes to raising a young child, a bad decision can influence his life.

In conclusion, ‘I want a child’ is a program that breaks taboos and it is daring because it is a topic that exists and is present nowadays, so we do not give it the importance it has.

Having children is something very simplistic for people who have facilities but certainly co-parenting is much more complex and it is good that there are programs that show the subject to discuss it. However, we must always impose on people, especially in this case children who are the most vulnerable and those who suffer.
