Enter into the Old Graveyard of Hasselt and testify of a suspended moment where nature took over everything and is also dying.

In the city of Hasselt, the capital of Limburg in the Flemish region, the graveyard Oud Kerkhof invites you to walk around its alleys covered by a carpet of yellow and red leaves coming from naked trees revealing their branches and trunks, the warm light reflecting on the cold surface of the graves and warming up our hearts intertwined by the fresh breeze of October reminding us these All Saints Day memorials.

This place offers to its visitors a moment held in time, a quiet seizure from the fast and loud life coming from the streets outside its doors. This sonality here allows people to honor their deceased in a calm and comfy atmosphere where respect and memories are the key words. Indeed, this tradition in the late days of October is also a great reason to take time for ourselves with our family and enjoy this whole autumn ambience. Enter into the Graveyard Oud Kerkhof and testify of a suspended moment where nature took over.

Nostalgia and nature are coming together and give to its visitors a space with moss and ivy growing over the graves, emphasizing the time spent. You can also find typical trees with a symbolic link with death and so, a natural way of remembering the dead. For example, the taxus baccata or weeping willow, famous for its remarkable drooping port giving a much appreciated melancholy charm.

When trees represent mourning, the chrysanthemum portrays the flower of All Saints Day. Nature depicts feelings and atmosphere while symbolism on the graves highlight it. Tombstones hide many significations through concrete symbols. Indeed, you can find a mourning lady on a grave representing the grief, a man and a female’s hands shaking for eternal love and marriage or a broken tree symbolizing someone’s untimely death.
