The weather is getting colder and summer is coming to an end. The gentle breeze suddenly turns into an icy wind in a few seconds. We are now in Autumn.

It’s creepy time, Halloween coming.

Today is the time to dive straight into your fears, the old cemetery of Hasselt opens its doors to let you discover another world. In horror stories and legends, cemeteries are terrifying places where supernatural events often take place. The dead come out of their graves, the spirits wander around…

In fact, cemeteries are very peaceful places where the bodies of those who no longer exist are laid to rest. There are cemeteries in almost every city. Some are so remarkable that they are worth a visit, even if you don’t know anyone there. The Père-Lachaise cemetery in Paris is beautiful, and you can visit the graves of many people who have made history.

In the cemetery of Hasselt you can find a place of honor was set up near the entrance for the 149 soldiers killed in action in Hasselt during the First World War.

When you walk through the cemetery in Hasselt, time seems to stand still. It is like passing through a parallel world. Between panic and fascination you don’t know where to look. The wind carries you to the first statue: Mary, mother of Jesus, who stretches out her arm towards a grey sky.

The vegetation in this cemetery is also deceptive. There is a very special plant that is also a poison. Venom is the name of the tree. The seeds and extracts of this conifer contain deadly poisons; and the venom tree has been considered the “tree of death” since the Celts.

If the world of witchcraft attracts you this name will surely be familiar to you. You can see a Neo Gothic chapel with the name “Corswarem’s family” in the centre of the cemetery, overlooking all the other tombs. If you pass here you will not have the choice to stop to observe the whiteness of the stones that make up the building.

In the end you will not come across any spirits in this cemetery but only a sleepy place full of history and secrets. The cemetery of Hasselt also contains many symbols. References to death or eternal life, it is up to you to choose your point of view.

So if you get bored on Halloween, don’t hesitate to make a visit to the cemetery of Hasselt, which contains a thousand mysteries that will make you dream… or have a nightmare.
