The imaginary world of Tim Burton

The World of Tim Burton. C-mine, Genk. 2018.

A collection of more than 400 drawings, paintings, film fragments and texts illustrate the processes and evolutions that film director and creative artist Tim Burton has gone through during his extensive career. Independent curator Jenny He decided to set up an exposition to display the full extent of his work as a multidisciplinary artist. Until 28 november this exhibition is shown at the C-mine cultural site in Genk, Belgium.

For sure, Tim Burton is one of the best American cinema producers and directors in the world. He has been involved in more than fifty different projects that have turned him into a star, such as films, documentaries, books or illustrations. The exposition is divided into 11 different sections, which provide a complete overview of the several phases of his lifework.

The World of Tim Burton shows perfectly the great creativity that Burton has in mind. I would highlight the first section Around The World, my favourite without any doubt. It was full of napkins, notebook pages and whatever kind of paper he had near him, covered with drawings, quotes or illustrations that he has created during his journeys, as he is a very itinerant man. There were stained napkins from Paris, New York or even China. Brilliant, as he lets his imagination fly wherever he is. But, above all, what astonished me the most about those drawings was that all of them were made with various materials, like pens, pencils and corrector tape.

The part of the exhibition, showing unrealized projects and misunderstood outcasts, showed that no matter how famous he is, he was not always successful in his work, what pushes him to keep fighting and designing and creating new characters, scripts or pictures, but always loyal to his particular style, and based upon a creepy kind of designs.

This exposition is worth the while, no matter if you are a big fan of Burton’s work or not, because it is interesting to contemplate how his mind works as well as the capacity he has for developing and shaping all the ideas that come across his mind.

After being in New York, Paris or Prague, the exposition The World of Tim Burton showed up at the C-mine Museum in Genk, Limburg, until the 28th of November. The exposition is opened Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm. You can find all the necessary information on The World of Tim Burton C-mine site.
